WHAT IS A PLUGGED WELL? I SEE A NUMBER OF PLUGGED WELLS NEAR MY UNLEASED PROPERTY.

A "Plugged Well" is generally either a well that has been depleted or a well that has been drilled and was deemed unproductive. Plugged wells are permanently sealed to prevent any leakage or contamination.

Plugging is different than Capping. A capped well may be a productive well, but it is capped temporarily. Capped wells generally put a lease into Shut-in whereby no royalties are paid, but a pre-determined shut-in amount is paid until the well begins producing or is plugged, at which time it is for all intents and purposes dead.
